Orproject Architects

Design – Construct – Sustain

Orproject is an architecture and http://www.mobilecarcleaning.de/kamagra-gunstig-ohne-rezept/ design practice set up in 2006, with offices in London, Beijing and New Delhi. Our work explores advanced geometries with an ecologic agenda, the integration of natural elements into the design results in an eco-narrative.

Our projects range from experimental small-scale installations to large real-estate developments. We produce high-end luxury design, covering all aspects of a project from design and planning to practical completion. Our work has been published and exhibited widely, amongst other at the London Architecture Festival, the Furniture Fair in Milan, Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the China National Museum in Beijing.

Ecology as a Narrative expresses our approach to ecological design: More than creating perfectly efficient ecological machines we are interested in expressing, through a visual narrative, the sequence of steps in which architecture can harness natural elements. This sequence from a natural element to its integration into design is usually hidden within a photovoltaic panel or concealed behind cladding. We visually expose the sequence as a narrative by expressing each step in a stimulating game of perceptions, Ecology as a Narrative creates awareness of how harmoniously nature can blend into design.

Growth of a House

The competition brief asked for a free form design which can be built using the cellular fabrication system developed by Branch Technology. Instead of designing a geometry which can be built using the technology, we are suggesting to incorporate a logic of formation into the robotically constructed lattice system.

We are proposing Ntopios, the application of a cellular growth algorithm which computationally develops the final geometry of the Branch Technology lattice. The algorithm starts with a small amount of lattice cells which are programmed to divide and cost viagra online proliferate similar to the cells of living organisms. This proliferation of cells leads to a larger accumulation of the lattice tissue which forms the geometry of the house.

ç“£ Ban

Ban is a pavilion which has been constructed for the Beijing Design Week 2012. The Chinese title refers to flower petals, and similar to the way that the shape of a flower is created by its bent petals, Ban is constructed from bent polymer sheets which form a self-supporting structure and create shapes and volume from a multitude of leaves.

Based on Orproject’s research into anisotropic sheet morphologies, the geometries have here been used in a structural orthogonal orientation and form a system of columns, arches and vaults, all based on single-curved elements. The resulting field of lines takes the viewers eye across the structure and into the sky, and like a giant flower Ban is hovering in the air above Beijing’s ancient Hutong roofs.

Block X

Block X is the design for an office tower in tropical climates. The facade is designed to react to different shading requirements depending on the orientation, surrounding buildings and interior requirements. Those factors act as forces which deform the economic louver system and morph it into its required form.

Dynamorph

Energy To Form

Dynamorph has been constructed for the exhibition of the International Cultural Institute during the Venice Biennale 2014. Dynamorph compliments and exhibition of Nepalese shamanic artifacts and has been designed to visualise ‘Urja’, the energy which the shamans attempt to control, by creating an energy field around the exhibits. These exhibits act as centers of gravitational forces that act on the volume of the room to form Dynamorph. Positioned between the exhibits and the room, Dynamorph is an isosurface which encloses the visitors and forms a surreal, mystical volume to house the exhibits and the movements of the visitor. The surface is a materialisation of the ethereal interactions between the visitors and the exhibits, the branching and flowing geometry of the surface evokes the roots, trunk and branches that symbolize the three worlds of shamanism.

The visitors enter the force-field of the exhibits and are guided in their journey by the physical installation. Made up of over three thousand individual segments, the tessellated geometry resembles mass and movements – similar to the trajectory of planetary mass under the influence of stars or black holes, the formation of cumulonimbus clouds guided by winds, pressure and temperature variations, or the interaction between electromagnetic fields and subatomic particles. In Dynamorph, the exhibits are the energy sources of the exhibition, the visitors move under their influence, and the surface becomes the physical manifestation of both.

Frsh

Frsh is a pavilion built by the Architectural Association Beijing Visiting School 2013. Tutored by Aidia Studio and Orproject, 10 students designed and manufactured the installation within the 9 day course which was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The geometry of the surface was generated using digital, force-based analysis simulations, which resulted in compression and tension based morphologies. The surface itself becomes the structural system, which at the same time mediates the programmatic and spatial requirements of its surroundings. Each group of students designed large scale landscape and building proposals during the course of the workshop, and the installation was developed as a prototype for a possible construction system of the proposals.

Already the digital simulation used a tessellated geometry for its calculation, and this was further refined to create a paneling system for a simple manufacturing and assembly. Although the surface is double-curved in itself, each of its hexagonal components is perfectly flat and laser cut out of aluminium sheets. Openings of varying sizes allow for a differentiation of dark and light spaces. The integrated flanges could be folded by hand, stiffening the structure and forming the connecting points between components. The assembly itself took the group a mere 10 hours.

Like a magic carpet Frsh is hovering in space, creating volumes underneath it and a continuously floating landscape above.

An interesting result of the data reassignment, especially when transformed into 3-dimensional morphologies, are the repetitive data accumulations in parallel strata, which are caused by the analysis of the sound according to different time windows. The strata generation has a tendency to be linear, however shifts are occurring at intervals which realign the data according to the harmonic transformations of the sound sample.

For the piece Chuan, the human voice has been analysed with a relatively short time frame, which focuses the analysis onto the guttural sounds rather than on the longer lasting harmonics. The geometry results in a mostly vertical lattice, with complex joints at the points where a shift occurs from one alignment towards the next.

So Uncool Office

The design for the offices of the film company So Uncool in Beijing have been constructed to a very tight schedule and budget. A contemporary and minimal design has been applied to most of the office, and the central lounge area has been created as a special place to receive guests, for discussions and relaxation. Inexpensive but high quality materials have been used, and the design and construction of the bespoke furniture has been developed in close relationship with the construction company.

Colours Of India

The permanent installation for the Delhi Airport Duty Free area is designed to create multiple reflections and refractions of light into a colourful field, a decomposition of the sunlight into the colours of India. Using dichroic film, the undulating sheets form an ephemeral volume, a cloud of colour and light which floats above the retail environment.

Aquagarden

Aquagarden is an artificial garden that functions as a rain water distribution and collection system. Unlike conventional recycling systems, AG doesn’t hide its functional apparatus, rather it embodies it in its structured matrix, the branching system. Moreover AG operates as a cooling system through the evaporation of the trickling water. Rain water becomes the protagonist of the perceptual games, opening new potentials in the conception of ecologic infrastructures for the built environment.
